The need for airspace modernisation
Aviation contributes £50bn to GDP and employs nearly 1m people; it is a UK success story. Our airspace is critical to that, ensuring the safe and efficient passage of over 2m flights every year. But it has changed little in over 50 years.
Imagine the road network of the 1960s trying to cope with today’s road traffic levels. The amount of delays that motorists would experience would be unsustainable. Increasingly, that is what we face with our airspace system.
We simply won’t manage the demand we’re going to see in 10 years’ time without significant change today. And airspace change is complex and doesn’t happen quickly, it takes years and we are already behind schedule.
It is critical that the industry and Government now work together to deliver modernisation. It will benefit the flying public, the environment and communities below flightpaths. The Sky’s the Limit campaign is calling on the Government to prioritise its work on airspace and noise, and support industry efforts to do so.
